Application

If you are interested in joining my research group, please send me an email following the requirements listed below:

  • Email Subject: Application_[Degree/Position]_[Starting Year and Month YYYY/MM].
    For example,
    • Application_MASc_2023/01, for an MASc degree starting from January 2023.
    • Application_PhD_2023/09, for a PhD degree starting from September 2023.
    • Application_PDF_2023/05, for a Postdoctoral Fellow position starting from May 2023.
    • Application_UGRA_2023/09, for an Undergraduate Research Assistant position starting from September 2023.
  • Emails with other subjects cannot be identified by my automatic sorting setup and thereby may not get reviewed.
  • Your email serves as a cover letter which should include
    • Paragraph 1
      • Summarize your background, including your academic degrees, universities, and average grades and ranking (if applicable) in each degree.
      • Highlight the unique aspects that you think will make you stand out among other applicants. These aspects include but are not limited to industry experience (employment on design, analysis, R&D positions preferred, internship acceptable, course projects excluded), technical competitions (design, analysis, model making, etc.), significant awards and honours, teaching experience, special life experience.
    • Paragraph 2
      • State what made you interested in joining my research group and applying for UNBC.
      • Please be specific and refrain from using sentences like “I went through your publications and found that my research interest aligns with yours very well.” Generic expressions of this kind will downgrade your application.
    • Paragraph 3
      • Indicate that you meet UNBC’s minimum English requirement.
      • List significant grants that you are holding or will be holding as of the admission date.
      • State whether you can fund yourself partially or completely.
      • Indicate your Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, if applicable. If not applicable, you do not need to inform me of your citizenship.
    • Paragraph 4
      • Indicate what documents you have attached to your email.
  • Your email must be clear, specific, and concise. Please do not repeat details that should be best included in your CV, Research Statement, Transcripts, and other supporting documents. Take this opportunity to demonstrate your professional writing skill.
  • Attachments:
    • CV. Include but not limited to your educational history, academic appointments, professional employments, major projects and your specific contributions, publications, presentations, teaching (assistance) experience, professional qualifications, grants, awards, and honours.
    • Diplomas and certificates for all your post-secondary degrees. Scanned copies are acceptable.
    • Transcripts of all your post-secondary degrees. Scanned copies are acceptable. Optional to applicants for a postdoctoral position.
    • Research Statement (2 pages maximum). Describe your research motivation and interest; relevant research experience; proposed research direction, topic, or project; and research plan and methodologies.
    • Proof of English language proficiency (e.g. IELTS Test Report Form, TOEFL Score Report, or the score document of other English tests accepted by UNBC. Scanned copies are accepted.). Optional to applicants for a postdoctoral position.
    • Teaching Statement (2 pages maximum). Describe your teaching philosophy, experience, approaches, and effectiveness. Optional to all applicants. Applicants for a postdoctoral position are strongly encouraged to provide this document.
